AJ Williams-Tchen


A bit about myself

AJ Williams-Tchen is of Wiradjuri and Wotjobulak background. He is qualified nurse, youth worker, social worker, community development worker, career counsellor & Mental Health First Aid Instructor.

AJ has over 30 years of extensive experience in the fields of health, education, employment, community engagement & public speaking. AJ’s passion is providing MHFA and cultural education to both indigenous and non-Indigenous people and organisations. Since 2008, AJ has been providing professionally endorsed Cultural Appreciation and MHFA workshops on a national level. He has spoken at many national health conferences on Aboriginal mental health and working with Aboriginal patients and clients in hospital and community settings. AJ also devotes his time in Aboriginal adolescent mental health & suicide prevention.

AJ holds positions on a number of national committees in relation to reconciliation, health curriculum, Aboriginal heart disease and mental health. In 2015, AJ was awarded the Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership – Emerging Leader award for his community work and leadership in Aboriginal health & suicide prevention.

AJ is the founder and Director of GIRRAWAY GANYI CONSULTANCY, established in 2008. In 2010, Girraway Ganyi Consultancy was a finalist in the Wurreker Awards for Private Sector Employer Award in 2009 & 2010, and was a finalist in 2011 Victorian Aboriginal Business Awards. Girraway Ganyi Consultancy won the NSW Mental Health Matters Award for “Indigenous social and emotional well wellbeing”. AJs work is often seen as unique and aspiring, creative and adaptable.
